Historical Tour Fundraiser

Join us for a historical tour through Bulgaria and Greece!

We welcome you to join us on this adventurous historical fundraising trip to Bulgaria and Greece. We will visit many historical sites in Bulgaria that have stood the test of time. We will also visit biblical sites, as we follow the footsteps of the Apostle Paul in the book of Acts and others in Greece.

We invite you to join us in this amazing experience, however, space is limited!

*The $2500 trip cost is a tax-deductible donation to T&F International. Cost includes in-country lodging, transportation, 2 meals per day, excursions and group interpreter.

**Many historic sites were not designed for people with limited mobility. Although we will be traveling by bus, we will walk through the cities or to the sites themselves. All participants must be able to walk 5-7 miles a day which, at times, will include walking up and down steps in uneven terrain.

Locations/Sites:

Bulgaria

Sofia – The capital and largest city in Bulgaria. It is situated in the Sofia Valley at the foot of Vitosha mountain. We will visit the Ancient Serdika Cultural Complex, Statue of Sveta Sofia, Presidential Palace, The Church of St. George Rotunda, Ivan Vazov National Theatre, Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, The Basilica of St. Sofia, and  St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.  

Veliko Tarnovo – A city in north central Bulgaria. It is often referred to as the City of the Tsars. The town is situated on three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora. We will visit the Tsarevets Fortress, The Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension, an evening Spectacular Light Show, and Mini-Bulgaria Park.

Plovdiv – An ancient city built around 7 hills in southern Bulgaria. It is thousands of years old. It is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. We will visit Old Town and see ancient ruins, Roman-era Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, Kapana District with its creative charm and artisan antique shops, and Alyosha Monument on Bunarjik Hill.

Asen’s Fortress – A medieval fortress on a high rocky ridge on the left bank of the Asenitsa River. The Church of the Holy Mother of God is in the fortress. The area of the fortress was inhabited during the Ancient Roman and Early Byzantine period. It is situated in the Rhodope Mountains.

Dospat – A town in the very south of Bulgaria situated in the Rhodope Mountains. It is the home of Dospat Dam, the highest dam in Bulgaria. It is fed by the River Dospat. Beautiful views!

Rila Monastery – Also known as the Monastery of Saint John of Rila. It is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria and the Balkans. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains in the deep valley of the Rilska River. It is named after the hermit  Saint Ivan of Rila (876 – 946AD), and houses approximately 60 monks.

Greece

Kavala – A city in northern Greece situated on the Bay of Kavala. It is home to the Acropolis of Kavala (a fortress), old town walls and local cuisine. It is surrounded by the Aegean Sea, beautiful beaches, and picturesque views.  

Holy Baptistery of Saint Lydia of Philippi – In the Book of Acts (16:11-15) the Apostle Paul baptizes Lydia after her conversion. She is the first Christian to be baptized in Europe. The Baptistery has amazingly beautiful mosaics on the walls and arches, depicting scenes from the life of the Apostle Paul. Even today, many are baptized here. It is situated on the bank of the Zigaktis River, and it is a very calm and peaceful place.

Ancient Philippi – in the Book of Acts (16:16-24) the Apostle Paul and Silas were imprisoned here. We will visit the ruins of the ancient city, see where they were imprisoned, the marketplaces, the bath houses, the walls and their gates, the Basilica, and more.

Thessaloniki – The Apostle Paul’s second missionary journey took him to Thessaloniki. He loved the people so much that he wrote two letters to the Thessalonians. We will visit the of Church of St. Paul, White Tower of Thessaloniki, the Roman Forum, the Church of St Demetrios, and the Galerius Palace Complex (Rotunda).
